Cairo, July 11, 2026: Egypt has adopted a new set of sustainability and environmental targets for 2026 under the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) “Planet” pillar. The targets were approved during a meeting hosted by the Egyptian Ministry of Local Development and Environment to review progress made in 2025 and establish priorities for the coming year.
The initiative is aimed at promoting sustainable management of natural resources, strengthening climate adaptation measures, advancing the circular economy, and supporting sustainable urban development. According to the ministry, the 2026 plan includes goals such as benefiting more than 74,000 citizens through natural resource management programs, reclaiming and rehabilitating nearly 4,000 hectares of land, and extending early warning services to more than 471,000 people.
Additional targets include developing nine new national policies, supporting 17 policies and instruments related to sustainable consumption and production, reducing pollutants, saving energy, and expanding renewable energy capacity. The framework also seeks to improve urban planning and governance through the development of 16 new urban planning frameworks.
Egyptian officials and United Nations representatives emphasized that environmental and climate challenges are interconnected with water, agriculture, energy, health, and economic development. The meeting concluded with commitments to strengthen coordination, monitor progress, and mobilize resources to achieve the 2026 sustainability targets.
