The Kerala Government has constituted an expert committee to investigate the recent landslide at the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi tunnel project site in Wayanad, where several workers lost their lives and others were injured. The decision was taken following a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister to determine the causes of the tragedy and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The committee comprises specialists in geology, environmental science, and earth sciences, including experts from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut, the Directorate of Environmental and Climate Change, and the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS). The panel has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive scientific assessment of the landslide site, examining the stability of the terrain, the impact of excavation activities, and the role of heavy monsoon rainfall in triggering the disaster.
According to the government, the committee will also evaluate the methods used for the disposal of excavated soil, slope stabilization measures, and compliance with environmental and safety regulations during the tunnel construction. Based on its findings, the panel will recommend immediate steps for safe debris removal, worker protection, and long-term guidelines for infrastructure projects in ecologically sensitive regions of Kerala.
Meanwhile, rescue and recovery operations at the landslide site have continued under the supervision of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fire and Rescue Services, police, and local authorities. The state government has announced ₹5 lakh ex gratia compensation for the families of those who lost their lives and has assured free medical treatment for the injured. Tunnel construction work remains suspended until the investigation is completed and safety clearance is granted.
Officials have stated that the expert committee’s report will play a crucial role in determining the future of the tunnel project. If negligence or violations of environmental norms are established, appropriate action will be taken against those responsible. The government has reiterated that the safety of workers and local residents will remain the highest priority and that any decision to resume construction will depend entirely on the committee’s recommendations and the implementation of stronger safety measures.
