Palakkad, July 8: The Kerala government has constituted a Special Task Force (STF) to investigate the recent increase in cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Palakkad district. The move comes amid growing concern over the rising number of crimes against children and follows a series of review meetings held by the Home Department and Kerala Police.
The task force has been formed under the direction of the State Home Department and will comprise senior police officers, child protection officials, forensic experts, cybercrime investigators, and representatives from the Women and Child Development Department. The team has been entrusted with examining the factors contributing to the rise in POCSO cases and recommending measures to strengthen child safety across the district.
According to officials, the STF will review pending investigations, analyse crime patterns, identify vulnerable areas, and assess whether online exploitation, social media misuse, or other emerging factors are contributing to the increase in offences. The team will also evaluate the effectiveness of existing awareness programmes, school safety initiatives, and child protection mechanisms.
As part of the investigation, the task force will coordinate with educational institutions, Child Welfare Committees, local self-government bodies, and non-governmental organisations working in the field of child rights. Awareness campaigns focusing on child safety, responsible use of digital platforms, and early reporting of abuse are expected to be intensified in schools and communities throughout the district.
Home Minister V. N. Vasavan stated that the Kerala government follows a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against children and that every reported case will be investigated promptly and thoroughly. He assured that strict legal action would be taken against offenders while ensuring counselling, rehabilitation, and protection for survivors.
Police officials have appealed to parents, teachers, and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected incidents of child abuse without delay. Authorities also encouraged citizens to make use of child protection helplines and official reporting channels whenever necessary.
The Special Task Force is expected to submit its findings and recommendations after completing a comprehensive assessment. The government believes the initiative will help strengthen preventive measures, improve investigations, and create a safer environment for children across Palakkad and other parts of Kerala.
