A preliminary investigation by the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has concluded that overspeeding and mobile phone use by the driver were major factors behind the tragic tipper lorry accident at Kottarakkara in Kollam district. The accident, which claimed multiple lives and left several others injured, has once again raised serious concerns about road safety and compliance with traffic regulations in Kerala.
According to the MVD’s preliminary findings, the tipper lorry was travelling well above the permitted speed limit when the driver allegedly became distracted while using a mobile phone. Investigators believe the loss of concentration significantly reduced the driver’s ability to react in time, leading to the devastating collision. Officials stated that the findings were based on evidence collected during the inspection, including vehicle data, CCTV footage, and witness statements.
The department has also begun examining whether the vehicle complied with mandatory safety regulations, including mechanical fitness, braking efficiency, and permit conditions. Authorities are reviewing the driver’s records to determine whether there were previous traffic violations or other issues related to driving behaviour.
Following the accident, the Transport Department announced that enforcement against traffic violations involving heavy vehicles will be intensified across the state. Special inspection drives will focus on speeding, distracted driving, overloaded vehicles, and adherence to safety standards. Officials said additional surveillance through AI-enabled traffic cameras and roadside inspections would help improve compliance.
Road safety experts have stressed that using a mobile phone while driving is one of the leading causes of preventable road accidents. They noted that even a few seconds of distraction at high speed can have fatal consequences, particularly for heavy commercial vehicles such as tipper lorries.
The Kerala government has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and assured that all aspects of the accident will be thoroughly investigated. If negligence is established, appropriate legal and departmental action will be taken against those responsible.
The Kottarakkara tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, improved driver training, and greater public awareness about the dangers of distracted and reckless driving.
