Chennai Metro Rail has recorded a significant increase in passenger numbers during June, driven by the reopening of schools, colleges, and educational institutions across Tamil Nadu. The return of students, teachers, and office-goers has led to a steady rise in daily commuter traffic, marking a strong recovery in metro usage after the summer vacation period.
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the increase in ridership reflects the growing reliance on the metro as a fast, reliable, and convenient mode of public transport. Metro services have experienced higher passenger volumes during peak morning and evening hours, particularly on routes connecting residential neighbourhoods with educational institutions and major business districts. Officials expect commuter numbers to remain strong as the new academic year progresses.
CMRL has also continued promoting digital ticketing through QR codes, mobile applications, and the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) to ensure smoother travel and reduce waiting times at stations. With Phase II expansion work progressing across the city, the metro network is expected to accommodate even more commuters in the coming years, further strengthening Chennai’s public transportation system.
