In a landmark decision aimed at strengthening Kerala’s creative economy, the state government has officially granted industry status to the cinema sector in the Kerala Budget 2026–27. The announcement is being hailed as a major milestone for Malayalam cinema, which has long sought formal recognition as an industry to improve access to investment, infrastructure, and institutional support.
Alongside this historic recognition, the government announced the establishment of the J. C. Daniel International Film City (Chitranagaram) in Kochi with an initial allocation of ₹100 crore. The project is named after J. C. Daniel, widely regarded as the father of Malayalam cinema. The Film City is expected to provide world-class production facilities and position Kerala as a major filmmaking destination in India.
Officials stated that the move is designed to attract national and international film productions, generate employment opportunities, and strengthen allied sectors such as tourism, hospitality, technology, and media services. The Film City will offer advanced shooting floors, post-production facilities, digital studios, and infrastructure required for modern filmmaking.
The budget also includes measures to support the broader film ecosystem. The government has proposed the creation of dedicated anti-piracy mechanisms to combat illegal distribution of films, a long-standing concern for producers and filmmakers. Additional initiatives are expected to encourage emerging filmmakers, digital creators, and independent content producers.
Leading figures from the Malayalam film industry have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a transformative step that could help the sector achieve sustainable growth. Industry representatives believe the decision will improve investor confidence and make it easier for filmmakers to access financial assistance and professional infrastructure.
