The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for five northern districts of Kerala — Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod — warning of extremely heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon gains strength across the state. The alert indicates the possibility of rainfall exceeding 20 cm within 24 hours in isolated locations, raising concerns about flooding, landslides, and disruptions to normal life.
State disaster management authorities have directed district administrations to remain on high alert. Emergency response teams, including Fire and Rescue Services, police units, and disaster management personnel, have been deployed in vulnerable areas. Authorities are closely monitoring rivers, dams, and landslide-prone hill regions, especially in Wayanad and the northern districts.
Residents living near rivers, streams, low-lying areas, and hillside locations have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official instructions. People have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to stay updated through official weather bulletins and district administration advisories.
The warning comes shortly after the official arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala. Weather experts expect widespread rainfall to continue over the coming days, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast in several parts of the state. Strong winds, waterlogging, and localized flooding are also possible in urban and coastal areas.
Educational institutions and local authorities in some districts are reviewing safety measures and may announce precautionary restrictions if weather conditions worsen. Travelers have been advised to check weather updates before undertaking journeys, particularly through hilly regions where landslides and road blockages may occur.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has appealed to the public not to spread unverified information and to rely only on official alerts issued by the IMD and government agencies. Emergency control rooms have been activated in affected districts to respond quickly to any weather-related incidents.
Officials emphasized that preparedness and public cooperation are essential as Kerala experiences one of the most active phases of the monsoon season. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and will issue further advisories based on evolving weather conditions.
