Authorities have imposed a daytime ban on the movement of multi-axle trucks along the Thamarassery Ghat section of National Highway 766 as part of efforts to improve road safety and traffic management during the monsoon season. The restriction comes into effect amid concerns over heavy rainfall, reduced visibility, landslide risks, and increasing traffic congestion on one of Kerala’s most important mountain roads.
The Thamarassery Ghat, which connects Kozhikode district with Wayanad, is a vital transportation corridor used by thousands of commuters, tourists, and commercial vehicles every day. However, the narrow winding roads, steep gradients, and sharp hairpin bends make the route particularly vulnerable to accidents and traffic disruptions during periods of intense rainfall.
According to officials, the daytime restriction on multi-axle trucks is intended to reduce congestion and improve the movement of smaller vehicles, public transport buses, emergency services, and tourist traffic. Heavy vehicles often face difficulties negotiating the ghat’s curves, especially during adverse weather conditions, leading to traffic bottlenecks and safety concerns.
The decision follows consultations involving the district administration, police, transport authorities, and road safety experts. Officials noted that the monsoon season typically brings an increase in road-related incidents in hilly areas due to slippery surfaces, fog, falling rocks, and occasional landslides. Restricting large commercial vehicles during daytime hours is expected to enhance overall road safety and reduce travel delays.
Alternative travel schedules have been recommended for transport operators, with heavy vehicles permitted to use the route during designated hours. Enforcement teams have been deployed at key checkpoints to ensure compliance with the new regulations and to assist motorists when necessary.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged all travelers using the Thamarassery Ghat to exercise caution, follow traffic advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain. Emergency response teams and disaster management units have also been placed on alert to respond quickly to any weather-related incidents.
The temporary restriction is expected to remain in force throughout the peak monsoon period and will be reviewed based on weather conditions, traffic patterns, and public safety requirements. Officials believe the measure will help ensure smoother traffic flow and safer travel for all road users during the rainy season.
