The Thamarassery Ghat, which connects Kozhikode district with Wayanad, is a vital transportation corridor used by thousands of commuters, tourists, and commercial vehicles every day. However, the narrow winding roads, steep gradients, and sharp hairpin bends make the route particularly vulnerable to accidents and traffic disruptions during periods of intense rainfall.
According to officials, the daytime restriction on multi-axle trucks is intended to reduce congestion and improve the movement of smaller vehicles, public transport buses, emergency services, and tourist traffic. Heavy vehicles often face difficulties negotiating the ghat’s curves, especially during adverse weather conditions, leading to traffic bottlenecks and safety concerns.
