Kerala is preparing for the arrival of the southwest monsoon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alerts for multiple districts, warning of very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in the coming days. Weather officials have indicated that conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the monsoon to make its official onset over the state by June 4.
According to the IMD, widespread rainfall activity is expected across Kerala between June 2 and June 6. Several districts, particularly in northern Kerala, have been placed under orange alert, while the remaining districts remain under yellow alert. An orange alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm within a 24-hour period and calls for heightened preparedness by local authorities and the public.
Meteorologists stated that the southwest monsoon has been delayed slightly this year, missing its normal June 1 onset date. However, strengthening weather systems over the Arabian Sea and favorable atmospheric conditions are now supporting its advance toward Kerala. The arrival of the monsoon marks the beginning of India’s primary rainy season and plays a crucial role in agriculture, water resources, and power generation.
State authorities have intensified monsoon preparedness measures, including drainage cleaning, dam monitoring, flood-control activities, and emergency response planning. Disaster management teams, fire and rescue services, and district administrations have been placed on alert to respond quickly to any weather-related emergencies.
The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph in some areas. Residents living in low-lying regions, near rivers, and in landslide-prone hilly areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official advisories. Fishermen have also been cautioned about rough sea conditions along the Kerala coast.
Meanwhile, farmers and water resource managers are closely monitoring the situation, as the monsoon is essential for paddy cultivation, reservoir replenishment, and overall agricultural productivity. Experts expect rainfall intensity to increase further once the monsoon officially enters the state.
With orange alerts now in force and rainfall activity intensifying, Kerala is entering a crucial weather period that will shape the state’s monsoon season in the weeks ahead.
