The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has imposed district-wise restrictions on the movement of tipper lorries during school commute hours as part of efforts to improve road safety following the reopening of schools across the state. The restrictions came into effect on June 1 and are aimed at reducing traffic congestion and minimizing the risk of accidents involving schoolchildren.
According to MVD officials, the decision was taken in view of the large number of students traveling to and from schools during peak morning and evening hours. Heavy vehicles such as tipper lorries are often involved in road safety concerns due to their size, limited visibility, and operation on busy urban roads. Authorities believe restricting their movement during school timings will help create safer roads for students and other commuters.
The restrictions vary slightly from district to district based on local school schedules and traffic patterns. In Ernakulam district, for example, tipper lorries are prohibited from operating between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. in the morning and between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the evening. Similar timing regulations have been announced across other districts in Kerala.
MVD officials stated that the move is also intended to ease congestion during peak hours, when roads experience increased traffic from school buses, private vehicles, pedestrians, and public transport services. Enforcement teams have been instructed to monitor compliance closely and take action against violators.
In addition to the tipper restrictions, authorities have directed motorists to exercise extra caution near school zones. Parking near school entrances, roadside vending that obstructs traffic, and speeding in school areas will be subject to stricter monitoring. Schools have also been advised to ensure orderly pick-up and drop-off arrangements for students.
Road safety experts and parent associations have welcomed the initiative, noting that heavy vehicle restrictions during school hours can significantly reduce accident risks. The move is part of Kerala’s broader efforts to enhance child safety on roads and create a more secure commuting environment for students as the new academic year begins.
