Schools across Kerala reopened today for the 2026–27 academic year after the summer vacation, welcoming more than 42 lakh students back to classrooms. Around three lakh children entered Class 1 this year as schools organized colorful Praveshanolsavam (school reopening celebrations) across the state.
The state-level reopening ceremony was held at the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School in Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan inaugurated the event, while Education Minister N. Shamsuddin presided over the function. Schools were instructed to focus on student interaction and welcoming activities instead of lengthy formal speeches.
Students were welcomed with decorations, cultural programs, gifts, balloons, and special orientation sessions. Teachers and school authorities arranged activities aimed at helping children comfortably transition back into academic life after the long vacation.
The General Education Department stated that nearly 95% of textbook distribution had been completed before reopening day. Authorities also confirmed that academic calendars, safety guidelines, and classroom preparations were finalized across government and aided schools.
A major focus this year is student safety and digital awareness. As part of a statewide initiative supported by Kerala Police Cyberdome, students, parents, and teachers participated in cyber safety awareness activities and pledges during reopening programs. Officials said the initiative aims to improve awareness about online safety, cybercrime prevention, and responsible digital behavior among schoolchildren.
The Kerala government has also announced plans to strengthen educational quality through new Centres of Excellence and Centres of Scientific Temper, aimed at encouraging innovation, scientific thinking, and modern learning standards in schools.
Education authorities stated that the academic calendar for 2026–27 has been structured to ensure required instructional hours across different school levels. Special monitoring will continue throughout the year to maintain academic quality, attendance, and student welfare.
With classrooms once again filled with students, teachers, and parents, the reopening marks the official beginning of another important academic year across Kerala.
