Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan announced that a comprehensive master plan aimed at transforming Kochi into a modern model city will be prepared within the next six months. The announcement was made during a high-level development meeting attended by government officials, urban planners, civic authorities, and infrastructure experts in Kochi.

According to the Chief Minister, the proposed master plan will focus on creating a sustainable, well-connected, and environmentally resilient urban system capable of addressing Kochi’s growing population, traffic congestion, flooding issues, and infrastructure demands. Authorities stated that the project will include long-term planning for transportation, drainage, waste management, housing, tourism, and smart city expansion.

Officials said the government intends to develop Kochi using a “twin-city model” that would integrate nearby urban regions and improve coordinated development across Greater Kochi. The plan is expected to prioritize metro connectivity, road expansion, water transport systems, flood mitigation measures, and modernization of public infrastructure.

The Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of improving urban mobility and reducing recurring waterlogging problems that affect Kochi during the monsoon season. Special attention will reportedly be given to drainage rehabilitation, canal restoration, coastal protection, and climate-resilient infrastructure projects.

Government representatives stated that consultations with urban planning experts, environmental specialists, business communities, and public stakeholders will be conducted before finalizing the blueprint. The administration aims to prepare a scientifically designed development strategy that balances economic growth with environmental sustainability.

The announcement has generated positive reactions from business groups, tourism stakeholders, and residents who have long demanded comprehensive urban reforms for Kochi. Experts believe the project could significantly improve the city’s infrastructure, investment potential, and quality of life if implemented effectively.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders welcomed the proposal but stressed the need for transparent execution and timely implementation. They also urged the government to address existing civic problems, including waste management, traffic bottlenecks, and flood control, while preparing the larger development roadmap.

The proposed master plan is expected to become one of the state government’s major urban development initiatives in the coming years.
