The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a hot and humid weather warning across Kerala, placing the state under a yellow alert as temperatures continue to rise significantly. Several districts are experiencing above-normal heat levels, increasing discomfort among residents and raising health concerns.

Palakkad recorded one of the highest temperatures in the state, crossing 40°C and reaching 40.1°C, which is notably above the seasonal average. Similarly, Punalur reported temperatures close to 39.8°C, with high humidity levels around 78%. This combination has pushed the heat index — or “feels-like” temperature — to an intense 45–48°C in some areas.

Other regions, including Kochi, Kottayam, Kannur, and Thrissur, have also reported temperatures ranging between 37°C and 38°C. The IMD has forecast that temperatures may rise further by 2–3°C across multiple districts in the coming days, intensifying the heatwave-like conditions.

In addition to the heat, the weather department has also warned of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in certain parts of Kerala. While these may offer temporary relief, they could also pose risks such as sudden heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Authorities have advised people to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and limiting outdoor activities, especially in the afternoon. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with health conditions have been urged to remain cautious.

This unusual rise in temperature highlights the growing impact of changing climate patterns and seasonal variations, with Kerala experiencing increasingly intense summer conditions in recent years.
