Kerala has taken a significant step toward accelerating infrastructure development by investing ₹2,175 crore in land acquisition for national highway projects across the state. This move is aimed at speeding up the execution of key highway expansions and improving overall connectivity, especially in central Kerala regions such as Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Alappuzha.
What makes this development notable is that Kerala has emerged as the only state in India currently contributing up to 25% of the land acquisition cost for national highway projects. This proactive financial participation is helping overcome one of the biggest bottlenecks in infrastructure development—delays in acquiring land.
The investment has already facilitated the acquisition of over 400 hectares of land under the Kochi Project Implementation Unit. This has enabled faster progress on several major projects, including the Angamaly–Kundannoor Bypass, the Kochi–Theni Greenfield Highway, and the Edappally–Aroor elevated highway.
Additionally, key stretches of National Highway 66, such as Ramanattukara–Valancherry and Valancherry–Kappirikkad, have reached provisional completion and are now operational as high-speed six-lane corridors. These developments are expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion across the state.
The Kochi Bypass project has also been upgraded from a six-lane road to an eight-lane expressway extending to Aroor, further strengthening Kerala’s road network. Overall, this large-scale investment reflects the state’s commitment to modern infrastructure, economic growth, and improved mobility for its citizens.
