Traders reported that the usually crowded harbour appeared unusually quiet, with many mechanised and deep-sea fishing boats remaining docked due to a seasonal drop in catch and rising operational costs. Fishermen also cited the high price of commercial gas cylinders—around ₹7,000 each— as a reason for reducing fishing trips.

Because of the reduced supply, several popular varieties such as seer fish (vanjiram), black pomfret, sardines, anchovies, and squid have become scarce in wholesale and retail markets across the city. Vendors say demand remains strong, but the limited availability has pushed prices higher in many markets.

The shortage has also affected markets like Chintadripet, where traders are now expecting additional supplies from neighbouring states such as Kerala once the fishing ban begins.

Officials from the fisheries department explained that the slowdown is common before the annual fishing ban starting on April 15, when mechanised boats are not allowed to operate for about two months to protect marine life during the breeding season.News as Reported.
