In a major infrastructure boost, South Western Railway has announced the quadrupling of the busy Bengaluru–Bangarpet railway line. The ₹1,481-crore project aims to significantly reduce congestion and improve connectivity for both passengers and freight movement.

The 42-kilometer stretch is one of the most heavily used rail corridors in the region, connecting Bengaluru with key towns and serving as an important link toward Chennai. Currently operating as a double-line track, it often faces delays due to heavy traffic. The expansion to four tracks is expected to increase capacity and ensure smoother operations.

Officials stated that the project gained momentum after being declared a “special railway project” in late 2025, which helped speed up approvals and land acquisition processes. Once completed, the upgrade will benefit thousands of daily commuters from towns such as Malur, Tekal, and Devangonthi.

The project is also expected to improve punctuality for long-distance trains, including premium services like Vande Bharat and Shatabdi Express. Freight movement efficiency will also see a boost, supporting regional economic growth.

Experts believe that infrastructure projects like this are crucial for Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding population and increasing transportation demands.

With completion timelines being closely monitored, the railway upgrade is seen as a key step toward modernizing the region’s transport network and enhancing connectivity between major South Indian cities.
