Bengaluru’s growing parking crisis has prompted authorities to propose multi-level parking facilities at several metro stations across the city. The plan, led by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), aims to ease congestion and improve last-mile connectivity for commuters.
Currently, many metro stations already have parking spaces, but these are often insufficient to meet demand. As a result, commuters frequently park vehicles on nearby roads, causing traffic congestion and blocking access for residents and emergency services.
The new proposal includes constructing multi-storey parking structures at around nine metro stations. Authorities hope this will encourage more people to use public transport while reducing roadside parking issues.
However, the plan has sparked mixed reactions among citizens. Residents living near metro stations have raised concerns about increased traffic and reduced open spaces. In areas like Rajajinagar, locals have already reported difficulties due to overcrowded streets and illegal parking.
Commuters, on the other hand, have largely welcomed the proposal. Many believe that better parking facilities will make metro travel more convenient, especially for those who rely on personal vehicles to reach stations.
Experts suggest that the success of the project will depend on careful planning, including integration with public transport systems and pricing strategies. Some have proposed combined parking and metro ticket packages to encourage usage.
As Bengaluru continues to expand, addressing parking and mobility challenges remains a top priority. The multi-level parking initiative could play a key role in shaping the city’s future transport system.
