A long-awaited infrastructure project in west Bengaluru is nearing completion, bringing relief to thousands of daily commuters. The Challaghatta railway underbridge, a key component of the city’s Major Arterial Road (MAR), has been successfully completed despite significant engineering challenges.
The project connects Magadi Road to the Bengaluru–Mysuru Highway through Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, forming an essential part of a broader plan to improve connectivity in the region. One of the most complex tasks involved constructing a 40-meter underbridge beneath an active railway line. Engineers used a box-pushing technique involving massive concrete segments weighing over 1,200 tonnes, completing the work in just three months.
The entire corridor spans around 11 kilometers and features a 10-lane road with service lanes, cycle tracks, and urban landscaping. A vehicular overpass is also under construction and is expected to be completed soon. Once operational, the road will significantly reduce travel time and traffic congestion in western parts of the city.
This project is part of the Peripheral Ring Road Phase-2 initiative, aimed at enhancing connectivity between major highways around Bengaluru. Urban planners believe it will not only ease congestion but also support real estate growth and economic activity in nearby areas.
With completion expected by April 2026, the project marks a major step forward in Bengaluru’s infrastructure development, addressing long-standing traffic issues and improving the overall commuting experience for residents.
