Scientists are raising alarms over the rapid acceleration of desertification in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions, warning of serious risks to agriculture and water availability. According to reports from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the United Nations Environment Programme, land degradation is intensifying due to climate change, unsustainable farming practices, and deforestation.

Large areas across parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East are increasingly affected, with fertile land turning into arid, unproductive terrain. Experts say rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and poor soil management are reducing crop yields and threatening the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on farming.

Water scarcity is also becoming more severe as desertification disrupts natural water cycles and reduces groundwater recharge. This not only impacts agriculture but also limits access to safe drinking water in already water-stressed regions.

Researchers stress that urgent action is needed to reverse the trend. Sustainable land management practices, reforestation, and improved irrigation systems are among the key solutions being promoted. Strengthening international cooperation and supporting vulnerable communities will be essential to mitigate the growing crisis.
