The Government of Kerala is planning to expand electric bus services across major cities in the state as part of its push toward eco-friendly and sustainable public transportation. The initiative aims to reduce pollution levels, improve urban mobility, and promote cleaner energy solutions.
The expansion will be implemented in collaboration with the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), which has already introduced electric buses in select routes. Under the new plan, more electric buses will be deployed in cities like Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode, where passenger demand is high.
Officials said the move is aimed at reducing the state’s dependence on diesel-powered buses, which contribute significantly to air pollution. Electric buses are expected to offer a quieter, more comfortable travel experience while lowering operating costs over time.
As part of the expansion, the government is also planning to improve supporting infrastructure, including the installation of charging stations at bus depots and key locations. This will ensure efficient operation and maintenance of the electric fleet.
Authorities highlighted that the initiative aligns with India’s broader goals of promoting electric mobility and reducing carbon emissions. The transition to electric buses is also expected to create opportunities for technological development and green jobs in the transport sector.
Passengers are likely to benefit from improved service quality, reduced noise pollution, and environmentally friendly travel options. The government believes that expanding electric public transport will play a key role in building sustainable and future-ready cities across Kerala.
