The Government of Kerala has taken steps to strengthen coastal safety measures across the state by increasing monitoring and improving rescue preparedness along major fishing harbours. The initiative aims to ensure the safety of fishermen and coastal communities, particularly during periods of unpredictable weather and rough sea conditions.
Authorities have directed the Kerala Fisheries Department and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority to enhance surveillance and emergency response systems in key fishing areas. Additional monitoring teams have been deployed at several important harbours, including Kochi, Kollam, and Beypore, where large numbers of fishing vessels operate daily.
As part of the new safety measures, authorities are increasing weather monitoring and communication with fishermen at sea. Updated weather alerts and sea condition warnings will be shared regularly through harbour offices, radio communication systems, and digital platforms. This will help fishermen make informed decisions before venturing into deep waters.
Rescue preparedness has also been strengthened by coordinating with the Indian Coast Guard and local marine police units. Emergency rescue boats and response teams are being kept ready at major harbours to quickly assist fishing vessels in distress.
Officials stated that awareness programs will also be conducted for fishermen to educate them about safety equipment, navigation practices, and emergency procedures during rough weather. The government hopes that these steps will reduce accidents at sea and improve overall coastal safety across the state.
