Passenger traffic at Chennai International Airport has been steadily increasing as demand for both domestic and international travel continues to grow. Airport authorities say the rise reflects a strong recovery in the aviation sector and increasing mobility among travelers for business, tourism, and education.

Recent aviation data shows that Chennai Airport handled more than 22 million passengers during the 2024–25 financial year, making it one of the busiest airports in India. The airport also recorded over 156,000 aircraft movements, highlighting the growing volume of flight operations serving the city and surrounding regions.

Officials noted that domestic travel has been a major driver of growth. In the first half of 2025 alone, domestic passenger numbers increased by more than 10%, with nearly 8.7 million travelers recorded compared with about 7.8 million during the same period in 2024. Overall passenger traffic at the airport rose by around 8% year-on-year, reflecting strong demand for air travel.

Industry experts attribute the growth to several factors, including the expansion of airline routes, improved airport infrastructure, and increasing disposable income among travelers. Chennai also serves as a key gateway connecting southern India with destinations across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

To accommodate rising passenger numbers, airport authorities are continuing work on major terminal expansion projects and infrastructure upgrades. These developments aim to increase passenger handling capacity, improve security systems, and enhance the overall travel experience for flyers.

With travel demand expected to remain strong, aviation analysts predict that Chennai Airport will continue to see steady growth in passenger traffic over the coming years, reinforcing its position as an important aviation hub in southern India. News as Reported.
