Police in the rural areas of Ernakulam district have intensified anti-drug enforcement operations after a sharp rise in narcotics-related cases. The intensified drive has led to the seizure of around 177 kilograms of ganja within the first two months of 2026, highlighting the scale of drug trafficking in the region.

Officials said the quantity seized during this short period is nearly one-third of the total cannabis seized in the entire year of 2025, indicating a major crackdown by law-enforcement agencies. The contraband was reportedly trafficked mainly from eastern states such as Odisha and West Bengal, often transported by train and then distributed locally through smaller vehicles to avoid detection.

Police investigations have also revealed that several suspects involved in large drug seizures were posing as migrant workers, with at least 22 people arrested in connection with these operations so far. Authorities believe the traffickers were operating organized networks that distributed drugs across different parts of the district.

The intensified surveillance followed a rise in drug-related activities earlier this year, including cases involving ganja, heroin, and synthetic drugs such as MDMA. To control the situation, police formed special monitoring teams and strengthened intelligence gathering with the help of local residents.

Law-enforcement agencies have also urged the public to report suspicious activities. Officials stated that community cooperation, enhanced surveillance, and targeted raids will continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and protect public safety in Ernakulam district.

Authorities believe that sustained enforcement and public awareness will play a key role in reducing the spread of narcotics and preventing drug abuse in the region.
