The Kochi Water Metro has floated a tender to construct a new terminal near the Ernakulam Boat Jetty, aiming to strengthen water-based transport connectivity across the city’s island regions. The proposed terminal will act as a major hub for expanding services to southern and western areas such as Kumbalam and Edakochi.

Officials said the new terminal is expected to be one of the largest facilities in the Water Metro network, similar in scale to the High Court Water Metro terminal. The station will feature floating pontoons for ferry docking, automated fare collection gates, spacious waiting areas, and commercial spaces to improve passenger convenience.

The tender process has already begun, and authorities have set a bid submission deadline of March 21, 2026. Once the contract is awarded, construction of the terminal is expected to be completed within about 15 months.

Earlier plans to develop a terminal at Thevara had been delayed due to land availability issues, which led officials to focus on the Ernakulam location as the future hub for expanding the network. The new terminal will support additional routes and help integrate more island communities into the Water Metro system.

The Water Metro project, operated by Kochi Metro Rail Limited, is designed to provide eco-friendly and efficient transportation through Kochi’s backwaters, connecting islands and mainland areas while reducing road congestion.

Once the Ernakulam terminal is completed, authorities expect improved connectivity for commuters and tourists, making water transport an increasingly important part of Kochi’s urban mobility system.
