Police in Ernakulam district carried out a major cybercrime crackdown and arrested 16 people suspected of being involved in online financial fraud. The arrests were part of a special enforcement drive known as “Operation Cy-Hunt,” which aims to identify and dismantle cyber-fraud networks operating in the region.
According to officials, the operation targeted individuals who were allegedly involved in online financial scams and illegal money transactions. Many of the accused were suspected of providing their bank accounts to fraud networks or helping withdraw money that had been transferred illegally from victims through online scams.
During the operation, police registered 36 First Information Reports (FIRs) related to cyber fraud activities. Investigators also seized several electronic devices, including mobile phones and digital equipment, which are believed to contain evidence connected to the fraud cases.
Authorities stated that some of the suspects were involved in withdrawing money through ATM cards and cheques after fraudulent transfers were made into bank accounts linked to the network. The financial transactions involved large amounts of money, indicating that the group may have been connected to a wider cybercrime operation.
Out of the 16 individuals arrested, 13 were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody, while further investigation is continuing to identify additional suspects who may be part of the network.
Police officials said the crackdown is part of a broader effort to combat the rising number of cyber-fraud cases in Kerala. Law enforcement agencies are increasingly focusing on dismantling the financial channels and intermediary networks that enable online scams to operate.
Authorities also advised the public to remain cautious while using online services, avoid sharing banking details or OTPs with unknown persons, and report suspicious cyber activities to the national cybercrime helpline.
