The Kerala state government has requested the central government to increase flight services between Kerala and Gulf countries to support the large number of Malayali expatriates working in the region. The request comes amid concerns about limited flight availability and rising travel demand from expatriates who frequently travel between the Gulf and Kerala.
State officials highlighted that millions of Malayalis live and work in Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Many families in Kerala depend on the income sent by these expatriates, making regular and affordable travel between the Gulf and the state very important.
According to the state government, the number of passengers traveling between Kerala and the Gulf has increased significantly in recent months. However, limited flight services on certain routes have caused difficulties for travelers, including higher ticket prices and reduced seat availability during peak travel periods.
The government has therefore urged the central authorities to allow additional international flight services from major Kerala airports, including those in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur. Increasing the number of flights would help meet the growing travel demand and provide more convenient options for expatriates and their families.
Officials also pointed out that improved air connectivity will benefit Kerala’s economy. Expatriate workers contribute significantly to the state through remittances, which support many households and local businesses.
The state government has expressed hope that the request will be considered soon so that airlines can increase flight frequency and improve connectivity between Kerala and Gulf countries. Authorities believe that better air travel options will ease travel challenges faced by expatriates and strengthen Kerala’s long-standing connection with the Malayali community living abroad.
