Weather officials have warned that several districts in Kerala are experiencing a high ultraviolet (UV) index, mainly due to clear skies and strong summer sunlight. A high UV index means the sun’s radiation is stronger than usual, which can increase the risk of sunburn, skin damage, and heat-related illnesses if people stay outdoors for long periods without protection.

Authorities have advised residents to take basic safety precautions, especially during the afternoon hours when UV radiation is strongest.

Recommended precautions include:

  • Avoid staying under direct sunlight between 11 AM and 3 PM

  • Wear light-colored clothing, caps, or umbrellas when going outside

  • Apply sunscreen to protect the skin

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated

  • Limit outdoor activities for children and elderly people

Health officials also noted that workers who spend long hours outdoors—such as construction workers, farmers, and delivery personnel—should take frequent breaks in shaded areas.

With summer conditions gradually intensifying across Kerala, temperatures are expected to remain warm to very hot over the coming days, and authorities are encouraging the public to stay cautious and follow heat-safety guidelines.
