Authorities in Kochi have upgraded the sewage treatment plant located at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor as part of efforts to address the city’s growing waste management challenges. The upgraded facility is expected to play an important role in improving sewage treatment capacity and reducing environmental pollution in the area.

The sewage treatment plant (STP), which was originally built to process wastewater generated within the stadium complex, has now been modified to treat sewage brought from nearby areas as well. This expansion will help manage a larger volume of wastewater that would otherwise enter drainage systems or nearby water bodies without proper treatment.

City officials said that the upgrade will allow the plant to treat external sewage transported through tanker lorries, especially during periods when the city’s main sewage systems face excess load. The treated water from the facility can be reused for purposes such as landscaping, cleaning, and other non-potable uses within the stadium premises, helping conserve fresh water resources.

Waste management has been a major challenge for Kochi due to rapid urban growth, increasing population, and expanding commercial activities. Improper disposal of sewage and waste has in the past led to pollution in canals, backwaters, and other water bodies around the city. By strengthening treatment facilities like the Kaloor stadium plant, authorities hope to reduce untreated sewage discharge and improve overall sanitation.

Officials also stated that similar initiatives are being considered in other parts of the city to enhance wastewater treatment infrastructure. Strengthening sewage management systems is seen as an important step in protecting Kochi’s environment and maintaining public health.

With the upgraded treatment plant now operational, city authorities believe it will contribute to better waste management practices and support Kochi’s ongoing efforts to develop sustainable urban infrastructure.
