Chennai — Plans to expand the Chennai Metro Rail network are progressing as authorities continue discussions and development work on new corridors under the ambitious Phase-II project. Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said the expansion aims to improve connectivity across the city and reduce traffic congestion in rapidly growing suburbs.
The Phase-II expansion of the metro system will add nearly 118.9 kilometres of new rail lines and around 128 stations across three major corridors, making it one of the largest urban transport infrastructure projects in southern India. The proposed corridors include Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass, and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, connecting northern, central, and southern parts of Chennai.
Officials say construction and planning activities are moving forward with tunnelling works, elevated track construction, and station development already underway in several locations. The project is expected to significantly enhance public transport options and provide faster travel for commuters across key residential and business hubs in the city.
Authorities are also exploring transit-oriented development projects near metro stations to generate additional revenue and promote commercial growth around the corridors. The initiative is expected to improve mobility, reduce travel time, and support Chennai’s long-term urban development strategy.
Transport experts believe that once completed, the expanded metro network will play a crucial role in easing road congestion and providing sustainable transportation for millions of residents in the metropolitan region, news as reported.
