Chennai — The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched an extensive programme of road repairs and drainage improvement works across the city as part of its preparations for the upcoming monsoon season. The civic body has intensified efforts to strengthen stormwater infrastructure and restore damaged roads in areas that frequently experience flooding and waterlogging during heavy rains.
Officials said the works include repairing pothole-damaged roads, relaying asphalt surfaces, desilting drains, and constructing new stormwater drainage lines in vulnerable neighbourhoods. These projects are aimed at improving water flow and preventing rainwater accumulation on major roads and residential streets. Authorities have also deployed teams to clear debris and ensure that existing drains remain unclogged before the monsoon arrives.
According to civic officials, the corporation has already completed a large portion of stormwater drainage projects across multiple zones of the city. In recent years, the corporation has invested thousands of crores of rupees in building and upgrading an extensive stormwater drain network covering more than a thousand kilometres to mitigate flooding risks.
Engineers and field teams are currently monitoring progress in several flood-prone areas, while additional pumps and emergency equipment are being kept ready for heavy rainfall events. Residents have welcomed the preventive measures but urged authorities to complete the works quickly to avoid traffic disruptions and ensure smoother commuting across the city.
Civic officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to improve Chennai’s resilience to extreme weather and reduce the impact of seasonal monsoon rains on daily life and urban infrastructure, news as reported.
